Heike Tjepkema lives and works in Amsterdam. She is a multidisciplinary artist.
The environment plays an important role in her work. She investigates the relation between the individual and her/his surroundings and loosing grip on the world. This feeling of being lost is expressed in various ways. In Heike’s work one often encounters empty spaces. In her short films she reflects on social issues and has the capacity to get close to one’s heart.
For her audiovisual projects Heike frequently travels to West Africa. This has resulted among others in Videoletters, a project where children from the Netherlands and The Gambia/Senegal give insight into their own lives exposing their similarities rather than their differences. Her film NOMMO was inspired by memories about a boy she met in Mali years ago. Those memories led Heike to Paris where she found relatives of Moctar Guindo with whom she did an interview reflecting upon the current social and political situation in Mali. In 2014 Heike was nominated at the International Poetry film festival Amsterdam for her animation film “The day everybody was gone”.
Heike is currently working on the final edit of a film about Rastafari and reggae music in West Africa and creating a graphic novel called “Everything appears to be real”.
